World Matchplay from Blackpool starts tomorrow, 9 days of top darts, very much looking forward to it.
As ever, you can't really back against Phil 'The Power' Taylor, but I'm really fancying Mervyn King to get through to face the Power in the final. He should be in the opposite side of the draw, if I've read it properly, and although he'll face some tricky opponents, the price of 40/1 is too much temptation for me really. King is not very popular with the fans but is a great player and 40/1 is very generous, if you back him each way it's 1/2 odds if he reaches the final.
If you read the preview and went with my tips.... I did tip a 9 darter! Didn't expect it to be on the Opening night though! Barney is coming back to his best on last night's showing. Could also be a contender to challenge Taylor.
Please ignore the super top tip at 40/1. Ooops, can't be right all the time! King is out, long live the king! Whitlock on for highest checkout still folks.
Well done on the 9-darter though. It seems these are becoming more and more common, soon be like the holes in one at golf where you're almost guaranteed at least one every tournament.
There used to be a bit of an urban legend (although it my be true) that a couple of guys travelled the length of Britain putting on bets that there'd be a hole in one at one of the major tournaments. At the time the odds were very generous as the perception was that they seldom happened. But the guys had done their homework and knew that the odds were way too high. They cleaned up. Now the bookies are wise to it and I think it's odds on that there'll be hole in one in most tournaments now.
The standard of darts has increased dramatically really in the last few years so yeah, they are more common. The top players can seemingly hit them at a drop of a hat. It used to be once in a blue moon but now you're right it's more frequent.
Still fancy Whitlock to hit biggest checkout, possibly a 170. So don't lose total faith with my tips just yet!
ps. Can't wait for 3d darts on sky at the weekend!
I saw the footy in 3D in a Cardiff boozer when they launched. Wasn't too impressed tbh. The darts however I think will be a good one for 3D. In the preview it showed, that and boxing looked awesome.
My only 3D sport experience was in a shopping centre in South Africa where they were showcasing the new Sony 3D tellys. Were showing the highlights of World Cup matches. Wasn't impressed really, not worth the massive hike in price over a HD screen imo.
May well pop over to the pub for the darts final. My local has Sky Sports 3D (although is a dive of a boozer) so may check it out.
